Robert, THE TEN SPOT's first male Esthetician

Luckily, there are no such thing as “jobs for girls” and “jobs for boys” any more, but it’s still a fact that some industries have a bigger proportion of men or women than others. For example, even though we’re a pretty progressive bunch here at THE TEN SPOT, it’s taken us 10 years and 19 locations to hire our first male esthetician! Luckily, that’s changed with the opening of our brand new Don Mills location.

We caught up with Robert, a fantastic new member of the 10Spot team, to have a chat about what it’s like to be a man in a mostly-girls biz.

why did you decide to become an esthetician?

“I decided to train as an Esthetician because I am in search of place where I am able to grow with the times and adapt to new situations on a day to day and now that I am part of THE TEN SPOT family I feel that I am part of something.”

what is it like being a man in a female-dominated industry? are there any challenges?

“Being a male in an industry dominated by women is more interesting than challenging. Everyday is something new.”
“The hardest part is knowing when to speak on a topic that is being presented without misrepresentation of my character. My views on certain topics will be different from the women I work with. So I must take care not to offend while maintaining my individualism.”

how did you hear about THE TEN SPOT?

“I attended Bryan College for my nail tech certificate and found work with THE TEN SPOT through them.”

how has your 10Spot experience been so far?

“The experience is great. I am learning day by day with the help of an amazing group of ladies who are actually helpful and going to work doesn’t feel like going to work. I enjoy what I am doing and I look forward for what is to come next.”

what advice do you have for anyone interested in becoming an esthetician (particularly men)?

“For the men who are looking to pursue this path I would say just be mindful of every and anything you do. Your thinking and actions will be different from those you work with because you are a male and not to take anything to personal. After all, you are entering a field where the ladies run the show. Try not to offend or to be offended. And to keep an open mind.”

Thanks to Robert for answering our questions, and welcome to THE TEN SPOT team! You can book an appointment with Robert at our Don Mills location.
